In early 2023, I questioned myself whether I had been to Japan too often. It turned out that I had been there frequently enough that I felt too comfortable with nagivating around the cities. So, I made a shortlist of non-Japan destinations. I ended up with Munich.
Why Munich, Augsburg and Salzburg?
Normally, when I travel, I enjoy the culture, nature, and history of the destinations. Also, I also love documentary photography so much. So, with the limited time frame I have for my vacation, I decided to head for Munich during the Oktoberfest. I picked Augsburg due to the close proximity to Munich and lesser known tourist destinations. And Salzburg for the potential hiking and exploration.
Any preparation?
As I needed to work remotely for a few hours, traveled inter-city, and I headed for the Oktoberfest in one trip, I tried out a few things.
- As I wasn’t drinking at all, I tried an “imported” German beer to see how much I could handle. And yes, I could.
- Due to the inter-city commute with lagguage, I had to fit everything in a carry-on lagguage and a 25L backpack, including:
- the photographic gear (Nikon Z6, 50mm f/2.8 MC, 24-120mm f/4, 500mm f/8, mini tripod, one backup battery),
- MacBook Pro M1,
- iPad Pro,
- Nintendo Switch.
Where did I go?
Given the limited time there, I was primarily based in Munich (München) and travel to Augsburg (a one-day unplanned trip) and Salzburg (2 days of walking and hiking).
I originally planned to go to Vienna to meet my friends from Brno, Czech Republic but I did not have enough time to spare two days in Vienna.
Do I enjoy the trip?
Oh yes. While it was frustrating that everything closed early, it is very refreshing and eye-opening, especially all historical areas. If I have chance to visit that area again, I would not mind stopping by the area.
Here are the highlight from the trip.
